Welcome New Friends,
Since many of you are new to our farm newsletters, let me introduce ourselves. We are a small, family-owned and operated grass farm in Grannis, Arkansas. We raise 100% grassfed beef, lamb and goat, as well as pastured, heritage pork. We sell our quality products to a growing community of people who value the quality of their food, want to know where it comes from and what, exactly, is in it!!
We want to be your farmer!!
As the market season comes to a close, we are truly thankful and blessed. This has been a year of growth due to your efforts of spreading the word and supporting our farm. We are sad to see the farmer's markets close, but have some exciting news about the months ahead.

A Hard Week
A typical week for our family is busy and stressful. Last week was murderous. Our children showed animals at the fair (which is 35 miles away), we had a fair booth to man, normal farm chores and.... we also had 4 cows and 2 stocker calves die! 3 of the cows were actually our son's, Ben. He only had 3 cows. They died from mint weed poisoning. We have some of this broad-leaf, dark green weed in various areas. Our cows also had plenty of grass. As we rotate them daily, they have learned to eat some weeds along with the grass. They also trample some of the weeds and this becomes organic matter; our choice of fertilizer. To this point, this has been an ideal situation! We have seen them eat it in the past with no ill effect. We will be extremely cautious with this weed in the future. You have to mow it down or spray it. We chose to mow it down. We know there is a silver lining that we have yet to see. In a year from now, hopefully we can look back and say, "That is why............." and smile!
Here's the good news: New piglets born this week. Ruby had 15 piglets in the field without help. When she didn't come up for feeding time, we went looking for her. Four had died and she is raising an amazing 11 babies. Ruby is a 3/4 Tamworth and a 1/4 York. The piglets are 1/2 Large Black, 3/8 Tamworth and 1/8 York. We think that will be our best cross yet.

Can You Smell Fall?
This week we experienced some fabulous weather. With cooler days and nights, we can breathe a little easier. Now we just need a little shower of water to go with that perfect temperature. But we are truly thankful for what we have at the moment. But, can you smell fall? It isn't really a smell as much as a freshness or crispness in the air. Fall represents more than just a change of seasons for us. It is also a time of harvest, routines, planning and reflecting. What does Fall represent to you? I am going to post that question on our Facebook page. Please chime in.
Busy Days
We have a change of schedule for a few weeks. Both Ben and Matti will be showing heifers this year in our county fair. Ben will go on to show later in September in the 4 States Fair. We have also had some illness in our family that has required us to shift some responsibilites. Here are the market dates for September (Lord willing no more emergencies!) We will continue to service the online markets of Hot Springs Village, Hot Springs (Spa City) and Little Rock.
September 9th Polk County Farmer's Market, Mena, AR
September 11th Gateway Farmer's Market, Texarkana, AR
September 23rd Polk County Farmer's Market, Mena, AR
September 25th Gateway Farmer's Market, Texarkana, AR
Fall Beef and Pork
We are now taking deposits/orders for our fall harvest of beef and pork. If you are already on our wait list and I have communicated with you, please send your $100 deposit. We have pigs ready now. We expect our beef to be ready in October/November. This will be first come, first served! Shoot me an email if interested.
Grassfed Give-Away
We will be having a drawing for an 1/8 Grassfed Beef. You can sign up for this drawing at our booth at the Polk County Fair OR by visiting our Facebook page. Just leave your name, number and email address (optional), I will copy these and add to the ones from the fair! We will draw for the beef on Sept. 5th or 6th.

Market Schedule Announcement
We will NOT be able to attend the Gateway Farmer's Market in Texarkana this Saturday.
Stay tuned with Facebook, too.
Dear Foodie Fan,
Your Farmers are tremendously impressed with your food knowledge!! The answer to the foodie fun quiz is: COOL WHIP.
I was very surprised how many of you knew the answer! I took the first correct answer on email and facebook. Stay tuned for the next one. It shall be harder!!
Call to Action
While you are here, I just wanted to share a link with you that I have only began to research. I know your zeal for quality food and supporting small farms. I first saw this senate bill proposal on facebook, and am now searching out other sources of information. Please read and be informed. Nothing is too hard when we work together. Too much government, food giants and monopolies seem to control our sphere. But keep in mind how you eat an elephant: one bite at a time. Research, share and teach.
